Meeting of the Congregation

Candidates for church council election will be introduced immediately following both worship services on Sunday, November 2.  Nominations may be made from the floor at this time.  A meeting of the congregation will be held on Sunday, November 16, immediately following the single worship service at 10:00 a.m. and before the Harvest Dinner.  The sole item of business is the adoption of a General Fund budget for 2009.

Annual Harvest Dinner

< style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: arial;">Come together for a Harvest Dinner on Sunday, November 16, following the one worship service at 10:00 a.m.  Bring a side dish, salad or dessert to share. Meat, rolls, drinks and table service will be provided.  As we share a meal, give thanks for our church family and the many blessings God bestows.  If you are able to help with set-up, serving or clean-up, please sign the poster in the narthex.

Come and Watch Amazing Grace with Us

Bring your supper and join the Support Committee as we present Amazing Grace.  This movie tells the story of William Wilberforce and his contemporaries who fought to end English participation in the slave trade.  As Lutherans we say these words from the Lutheran Book of Worship: “We offer with joy and thanksgiving what you have first given us—ourselves, our time, and our possessions, signs of your gracious love.  Receive them for the sake of him who offered himself for us, Jesus Christ our Lord.”  Wilberforce provides an example of living them.  The movie and a brief discussion will be held in the Education Wing on Sunday evening, November 9, 5-7:30 p.m.  Evan the Almighty will be presented for children.  Beverages and popcorn will be provided.

Opening the Book of Faith

In the coming months, we will join other ELCA congregations in participating in the Book of Faith Initiative – an emphasis by the ELCA to help people become more fluent in the first language of our faith, the Word of God.  In order to reach as many people as we can, we will be putting some questions in an insert in the bulletin so that we can plan our studies. The first study, Opening the Book of Faith, is six sessions long.  I strongly encourage all members and friends of Clinton Heights to participate in this study which is wonderful introductory material to reading the Bible – not only for individual devotional Bible reading but also for group Bible study and discussion.  When you come to worship in October, please fill out the bulletin insert so that we can schedule multiple opportunities for folks to be together soon.

Men’s Bible Study

We continue to focus on the book of Ecclesiastes at our monthly Men’s Bible Study at Panera Bread.  This month we meet on Saturday, November 8, and encourage all men to join us.  As always, we gather at the Panera on High Street at Weisheimer between 9 and 9:30, grabbing something to eat or drink as people like.  We begin our study at 9:30 and end at 10:30.

TUESDAY LESSON STUDIES

Our weekly Tuesday  Lesson Studies continue.  We gather to study the scripture lessons for the upcoming Sunday.  Bring a sack lunch or just come to read the lessons and discuss them. Come join us on Tuesdays at 11:00 a.m.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to the Rev. Max Culver, friend and former interim pastor at CHLC, who was inducted into the Capital University Professors Hall of Fame.  This honor recognizes individuals who have served with distinction during extensive careers of classroom teaching.  Dr. Culver joined the Capital faculty in 1971.  Prior to his return to his alma mater, he was vice president of Academic Affairs at Kansas Wesleyan University and also held teaching posts at DePaul University and Concordia Teachers College.  He served as pastor of congregations in Illinois and Minnesota and as interim pastor in multiple congregations.  Dr. Culver served as head of the Social Science Division and chair of Capital’s sociology department, specializing in courses related to the criminal justice system.  In 1975, he received the prestigious Praestantia, Capital’s highest honor awarded for teaching excellence.
